Magic Or Science?

May 11, 2012

The Grade 3 students at TEAM School discovered a little magic trick during science class. Mrs. Gulledge brought in four white carnations and challenged the students to come up with a way to change the colour of the flower petals.

The students remembered that the stem of a plant acts like a straw, drawing water up from the roots to the leaves and petals. Using food colouring, the students filled four glasses with red, blue, yellow, and green water. Mrs. Gulledge snipped the bottom of each stem, and placed the freshly cut carnations into the coloured water.

Within minutes, the flower petals began to change colour. Magic? Science? You be the judge!
