It was announced today that the Peel District School Board (PDSB) "plans to close small literacy-focused special-education classes in elementary schools". According to the article, students who currently benefit from these groups will be moved into larger classrooms.
The PDSB classes that are being closed address the needs of a variety of students: students who require academic upgrading, students who benefit from small class sizes and extra teacher support, and students with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) who have had an educational assessment indicating a learning challenge. TEAM School addresses the needs of these students.
TEAM School was established in 1981 with the specifically stated mission of helping small groups of Grades 1-8 students with IEPs achieve academic success. For decades, TEAM School has provided an excellent academic upgrading programme where fundamental skills are consolidated. In the (up to) 9-student class, the TEAM Programme prepares students from Grade 1 for continuation either in the TEAM programme, or for a programme change once they demonstrate academic achievement at grade level.
Starting in 2024/2025, TEAM School will be introducing a smaller class ratio programme for students who would benefit from more support. Our TEAM Preparatory (Prep) programme will provide a setting where students work toward skill acquisition with emphasis on the integration of personal skills and work habits for individual success and a greater level of independence. Students are grouped by division (Primary, Junior, Intermediate, and Senior) up to the Grade 8 level, in classes of up to 5 students.
